My paintings explore the presence, character, and unexpected beauty of wild animals. Working primarily in acrylic, I draw from my own photographs and experiences of encountering wildlife in its natural environment. What may begin as a fleeting observation becomes an opportunity to look more closely—to consider the animal not simply as a subject, but as an individual within a larger natural world.

The Artist Behind the Work
Working as a sculptor early in my art career taught me to develop an inner vision—to understand form through my hands as well as my eyes. That instinct has become an important part of the way I paint animals.
The inner bones give shape to the outer picture. When I paint, I visualize the structure beneath the animal—the bones, muscles and underlying form that give the body its weight and movement.
Before painting the Steller sea lions, for example, I made drawings of their skeletal structure so I could better understand the animals I was about to paint. That knowledge gives me the confidence to move beyond simply reproducing what I see in a photograph. I can concentrate instead on the animal’s presence, character and expression.

Wolves Watching explores the quiet tension between the wild and the human world. Four wolves meet the viewer’s gaze with a sense of mystery and quiet strength, inviting us to pause and consider what they may be watching—and what they might be telling us.
