Sooke Harbour House on Vancouver Island has transformed from a family residence into a boutique hotel and restaurant since its construction in 1929. In the 1970s, Frederique and Sinclair Philip revamped it, gaining fame for their farm-to-table approach using local, seasonal ingredients. After losing the hotel in a notorious lawsuit, it underwent a $14 million renovation and has since reopened, aiming to restore its reputation for hospitality and culinary excellence. We invite you to join our painting classes at this newly refreshed hotel, featuring stunning views of Whiffin Spit, the Olympic Mountains, and orcas in the basin.

“Art On The Edge " is a "retreat from the world" vacation that offers an undisturbed,dedicated time to explore your passion for creating within four full days of painting and learning. During this time of discovery, you will find that not only do your painting skills improve but your approach to your artistic voice develops to another level. This is a time to give yourself a chance! This all happens in an environment where stunning beauty exists right outside your window.

The medium for the course is acrylics, but oils can also be used. An extensive "Introduction" package, sent to you at registration, will help you know what to bring. The class is "In-Studio," where the emphasis is on completing a painting from your chosen reference material. That material can be anything you envision—narrative or abstract—as long as it is your own.

The course will help you understand te precepts of making art, such as value, composition, and colour, as they apply to the painting you are doing in class. Learning how to identify colour bias and how to mix to get the right colour and value will be a fundamental topic for the class. The use of computer and software as tools will be consistently demonstrated.
